Studies vary but it’s agreed that introverted leaders comprise 30%-50% of the workforce.
By failing to specifically develop the unique traits of your introverted leaders you're under-developing 30-50% of your existing leadership potential. Include ambiverts (who have both introverted and extroverted traits) and the percentage can rise to as high as 70%. No wonder so many leadership development initiatives underperform!
Failing to adapt and include introverts means you're alienating some of your top talent and losing ground to organizations who are creating cultures that successfully engage their introvert leaders.
And it gets worse...Every day you're losing even more ground. Introversion is even more prevalent in Millennials and Gen Z, the leaders of tomorrow.
A 2017 Deloitte Study found that 59% of millennials are introverted personality types, significantly more than Gen Xers, at 46%, and baby boomers at 43%.
Even if your organization is actively developing leaders, it's likely in via traditional avenues that focus on traditional techniques. It’s an outdated Leadership Development model.
Traditional Leadership Development was developed leveraging extroverted techniques that are at odds with how introverts lead most effectively. That type of one-size-fits-all leadership development training simply won't help introverts reach their potential and, in fact, will very often alienate them. It's like giving a painter a hammer as a paintbrush…It’s the wrong tool for the job.
The simple reality is: Introvert and extrovert leaders
have different leadership development needs—
and traditional leadership development
inadvertently fails to address those differences.
In the old leadership development model some of your introvert leaders will learn to adapt on their own. But this typically takes years of frustrating trial and error and lost productivity and engagement during this time.
However, the far more likely scenario, is that your introvert leaders will leave in frustration before they ever adapt to your culture.
The cost of training leaders is expensive but it outweighs the cost of failing to develop leaders.
The cost of losing and replacing leaders is often estimated at 100-150% of their annual salary.
However, investing in leadership development and actually causing
Continuing with the status quo is the equivalent of leaving money on the table. It's not a sustainable (or feasible) strategy for several reasons.
Because developing introvert leaders required a different approach. Traditional leadership development is biased towards extroverted leadership strategies and tools. And, introverts are already 30-50% of your team and organization!
You want leaders leading… not figuring out how to navigate an extroverted world.
